Every week of the year, a Fellrunner Minibus rolls through Ainstable en route to Penrith (Wednesday) or Carlisle (Friday). What many people don’t realise is that the Fellrunner buses are a public bus service, open to all and operating to a fixed timetable. Even better, if you have a bus pass or are under 16, then you travel for free! Everybody else pays a fare – an adult return from Ainstable to Penrith is just £5.50 and £3.60 single. To Carlisle the return fare is £4.60 and £3.10 single.
Fellrunner operates three 17 seat minibuses from the base in Langwathby. Two of the three buses have low floors and a wheelchair space so no one need miss out! The Fellrunner was formed in 1979 and is, and always has been, completely run by volunteers. There are no paid staff.
We currently only pick up two or three regular passengers from Ainstable. Could you make use of the bus or do you know someone who might? It is a great way to see the countryside and enjoy the chat and the drivers are very friendly and helpful. Why not come and give it a go?
On a Wednesday, the Penrith bus departs Ainstable at 10.30 and goes by Renwick and Kirkoswald to arrive into Penrith at 11.22. You can get off at Booths/Morrisons, B and M and the bus station. On request the driver would take you to the Health Centre. The bus leaves the Bus Station at 14.35 (2.35pm) and arrives back in Ainstable around 15.00 (3pm).
On a Friday, the Carlisle Bus departs from Ainstable at 09.53 and arrives in Carlisle City centre at 10.25. It departs from Carlisle Bus Station at 14.30 (2.30pm) and gets back to Ainstable at 15.02 (3.02pm).
The bus will stop to pick you up anywhere that’s safe on the main road in Ainstable – just give a clear signal to the driver.
Come and give it a go! Rural bus services are disappearing, so use it or lose it!
You can contact Fellrunner on 07734 529432 – you may need to leave a message but we will get back to you!
We can also hire out a bus with driver for community groups – give us a ring to enquire.
